Short answer: for keyword and competitor research, choose Semrush if you want one platform for most marketing work, or Ahrefs if backlinks and organic research matter most. To plan and improve articles, use Surfer. On WordPress, Rank Math is the SEO plugin I run on this site, and SEOPress is a strong alternative with a flat yearly price. If you depend on Google Maps leads, add Local Falcon. Before paying for any of them, set up Google Search Console, which is free.
How I chose these: every tool below has a full review on this site, and each section says what my verdict rests on: running it on this website, using it in my own work, or hands-on testing. These tools do different jobs, so I group them by the job rather than ranking them against each other. Prices were checked on each vendor’s official pricing page on 23 October 2026. Start With the Free Tools
Many sites need less than they think. Before you subscribe to anything, cover these:
- Google Search Console shows the searches your pages already appear for, your clicks and indexing problems. It is free and comes from Google itself.
- The free version of an SEO plugin. Rank Math’s and SEOPress’s free versions handle titles, meta descriptions, sitemaps and basic schema.
- Ahrefs Free (formerly Ahrefs Webmaster Tools) audits and shows backlinks for sites you verify that you own.
- A free Semrush account gives a limited number of reports a day, enough to try the platform.
Pay for a research tool when you are making regular decisions about keywords, competitors or links and the free limits get in the way.
1. Semrush: Best All-Round SEO Platform
- Price: Free account; SEO $139/month or $117.33/month billed annually; Starter $199 or $165.17; Pro+ $299 or $248.17; Advanced on request
- Trial and refunds: 7-day free trial; 7-day money-back guarantee for first-time annual subscriptions only, not monthly plans
- Best for: Marketers and agencies who research keywords and competitors every week
- Skip it if: you only need occasional checks
- My rating: 4.7/5, hands-on tested
Semrush covers keyword research, competitor analysis, site audits, rank tracking and, on its higher plans, tracking how a brand appears in AI search answers. Its breadth is the reason to choose it: one subscription supports most of an SEO and content workflow. Its traffic and difficulty figures are estimates, so treat them as direction rather than fact. My Semrush review explains each plan, and my Semrush discount guide lists the official ways to pay less.
2. Ahrefs: Best for Backlinks and Competitor Research
- Price: Starter $29/month (monthly only); Lite $129/month; Standard $249; Advanced $449; Enterprise $1,499 with an annual commitment. Annual billing gives two months free
- Free option: Ahrefs Free for sites you verify; no free trial of paid plans
- Refunds: Ahrefs says it does not issue refunds in general
- Best for: People who make decisions from backlink and competitor data
- My rating: 4.7/5, hands-on tested
Ahrefs is the tool I would pick when links and competitors’ organic traffic drive the work. Site Explorer, Keywords Explorer, Site Audit and Rank Tracker cover the core jobs. Its biggest trade-offs are cost, plan limits and the fact that, like every tool here, its metrics are estimates. Start with Ahrefs Free on your own site and pay when you need competitor data. My Ahrefs review covers the plans and what each one limits.
Semrush or Ahrefs?
Both are excellent, and I rate them equally at 4.7/5. I lean towards Semrush for a broader marketing workflow and towards Ahrefs for focused backlink and organic research. Ahrefs is cheaper to start with on its $29 Starter plan, while Semrush has a free account and a 7-day trial. My detailed Semrush vs Ahrefs comparison breaks down features and total cost.
3. Surfer: Best for Planning and Improving Content
- Price: Discovery $59/month or $49/month billed yearly (120 documents); Standard $119 or $99; Pro $219 or $182; Peace of Mind $359 or $299
- Refunds: not stated on the pricing page; check before you buy
- Best for: Teams that publish or refresh content regularly
- Skip it if: you publish occasionally or treat the content score as a target
- My rating: 4.5/5, personally used in 2025–2026
I used Surfer during 2025 and 2026 to optimise blog posts, reviews and commercial pages, mainly its Content Editor, SERP Analyzer and Content Audit. It is good at showing which subtopics a page is missing compared with the pages that rank. I got the most value when I treated its suggestions as guidance and kept control of the writing. I no longer have an active subscription, so newer features are described from Surfer’s documentation in my Surfer review.
4. Rank Math: Best WordPress SEO Plugin for Most Sites
- Price: Free; PRO 7.99/month billed annually for the first year, then 8.99/month (unlimited personal sites); Business 24.99, then 27.99 (100 client sites); Agency 54.99, then 64.99 (500 client sites)
- Refunds: 30 days on new purchases, not renewals
- Best for: Bloggers and small business sites on WordPress
- Skip it if: you dislike plugins with many modules to learn
- My rating: 4.7/5; it runs this website
Rank Math runs this website. It handles titles, meta descriptions, XML sitemaps, schema, redirects and on-page checks from one dashboard, and its free version covers what most blogs need. Pay for PRO only when you need a specific feature, such as keyword tracking or advanced schema. The prices above are before tax. My Rank Math review explains what the free and paid versions include.
5. SEOPress: Best Plugin With a Flat Yearly Price
- Price: Free; PRO $49/year for 1 site, $59 for 5 sites, $149 for unlimited; renews at the same price
- Add-ons: Insights $99/year per site; optional AI credits from $19/month
- Refunds: 14 days
- Best for: Bloggers, affiliates, agencies and stores who want direct control of settings
- My rating: 4.4/5, hands-on tested
SEOPress does the same core jobs as Rank Math with a cleaner, ad-free interface and more manual control. Its predictable pricing, which renews at the same rate, suits agencies with several sites. The trade-off is a steeper learning curve, because you need to understand the settings. If your current plugin works, you need a specific reason to switch. More detail is in my SEOPress review.
6. Local Falcon: Best for Google Maps Rankings
- Price: Starter $24.99/month (7,500 credits); Basic $49.99; Pro $99.99; Premium $199.99. Pay as you go at $0.05 per credit
- How credits work: one credit is one map point in a grid scan; 100 free credits when you sign up
- Best for: Local businesses, consultants and agencies that rely on Google Maps leads
- Skip it if: you need audits, backlinks or broad keyword research
- My rating: 4.8/5, hands-on tested
Standard rank trackers show one position for a keyword. Local Falcon shows how your Google Business Profile ranks across a grid of points in your service area, which is how local results really behave, because rankings change with the searcher’s location. It is a specialist tool, so pair it with a research platform. Read my Local Falcon review and my local SEO checklist for how to act on the results.
Rank Math or SEOPress?
Choose Rank Math if you want the most features in a free plugin and guided on-page checks; it is what this site uses. Choose SEOPress if you prefer a cleaner interface, more manual control and a yearly price that does not rise at renewal. Run only one SEO plugin at a time.
Which SEO Tools Do You Actually Need?
- New blog or small business site: Google Search Console plus the free version of Rank Math or SEOPress. Add Ahrefs Free for your own site.
- Growing content site: add Semrush or Ahrefs for keyword and competitor research.
- Content team publishing every week: add Surfer to plan and refresh articles.
- Local business or agency: add Local Falcon to track Google Maps rankings.

Final Verdict
Start free: Google Search Console and a WordPress SEO plugin cover the basics for most sites, and Rank Math is the plugin I trust on this one. When research decisions become weekly, Semrush is the best all-round platform and Ahrefs the best for backlinks; both earn 4.7/5 from me. Add Surfer if content is your main lever, and Local Falcon if your leads come from Google Maps. No tool guarantees rankings: they show you what to fix, and the useful content is still your job.
Frequently Asked Questions
What is the best free SEO tool?
Google Search Console, because it shows the real searches, clicks and indexing problems for your own site. Pair it with the free version of Rank Math or SEOPress on WordPress, and Ahrefs Free for audits and backlinks on sites you own.
Is Semrush or Ahrefs better?
Neither is better for everyone. I rate both 4.7/5. Semrush suits a broader marketing workflow; Ahrefs suits backlink and organic research. Ahrefs starts at $29 a month on its Starter plan; Semrush has a free account and a 7-day trial.
Do I need a paid SEO tool?
Not at first. Search Console and a free SEO plugin are enough for many small sites. A paid research tool pays off when you regularly decide which keywords to target, track competitors or build links.
Is Rank Math better than SEOPress?
For most WordPress users, Rank Math offers more in its free version and guided checks, which is why this site uses it. SEOPress has a cleaner interface and a yearly price that stays the same at renewal. Use one, not both.
Is Surfer SEO worth it?
Yes, if you publish or refresh content regularly and treat its suggestions as guidance. It is harder to justify for an occasional blogger. The cheapest plan is $59 a month, or $49 a month billed yearly.
Can an SEO tool guarantee rankings?
No. SEO tools show you data and suggestions, and their traffic and difficulty figures are estimates. Rankings still depend on useful content, a sound website and how well you meet what searchers want.
