Short answer: if your host runs LiteSpeed, use the free LiteSpeed Cache plugin, because it uses the server’s own cache. On any other host, pick FlyingPress or WP Rocket as your page cache. If you want one service that does everything with almost no setup, choose NitroPack. Add Perfmatters if plugins and scripts are slowing your pages, and BunnyCDN if your visitors are spread around the world. Whatever you choose, run only one page cache.
How I chose these: every tool below has a full review on this site, and each section says what my verdict rests on: running it on this website, hands-on testing, or both. Prices were checked on each vendor’s official pricing page on 23 October 2026. I have not run all six on one site at the same time, so this is a guide to choosing, not a head-to-head benchmark. First, Know Which Kind of Tool You Need
“Speed plugin” covers four different jobs, and mixing them up is how sites end up slower:
- Page cache: saves a ready-made copy of each page so WordPress does not rebuild it for every visitor. LiteSpeed Cache, FlyingPress and WP Rocket do this. You need exactly one.
- Asset clean-up: stops unused scripts and styles from loading and delays JavaScript. Perfmatters does only this, so it sits alongside a page cache.
- All-in-one service: NitroPack optimises pages on its own servers and serves them through its CDN. It replaces your caching plugin rather than joining it.
- CDN: delivers files from servers near each visitor. BunnyCDN works with any of the plugins above.
The rule that matters most: run one page cache. Two caching plugins fighting over the same pages cause more problems than they solve.
1. LiteSpeed Cache: Best Free Option on LiteSpeed Hosting
- Price: Free plugin. QUIC.cloud, LiteSpeed’s optional CDN and optimisation service, has a free tier
- Best for: Sites on LiteSpeed or OpenLiteSpeed servers, such as Hostinger
- Skip it if: your host runs Apache or Nginx and you want full-page caching from the plugin
- My evidence: this website runs on it
This website runs on Hostinger’s LiteSpeed servers with the LiteSpeed Cache plugin, so this is the tool I use every day. When I measured one article on 23 October 2026, cached pages answered in a median of 73 ms and uncached pages in 519 ms, about seven times faster. The full settings, and why each one is on or off, are in my LiteSpeed Cache settings guide.
The catch is the server. Its page cache, smart purging and crawler only work on a LiteSpeed web server or through QUIC.cloud’s CDN. Its image, CSS and JavaScript optimisation work on any host, but without the page cache you lose its main advantage. LiteSpeed’s documentation says QUIC.cloud moves to monthly plans on 10 November 2026: a free plan, then paid plans from $5 a month.

2. FlyingPress: Best Premium Page Cache for Most Sites
- Price: $59/year for 1 site, $109 for 3, $229 for 25, $279 for unlimited
- Trial and refunds: 14-day free trial; 100% refund within 24 hours of a charge, 80% up to 7 days
- Best for: Bloggers, affiliate sites and agencies on any host
- Skip it if: you want a lifetime licence; all plans renew yearly
- My rating: 4.8/5, hands-on tested
FlyingPress is my top-rated caching plugin. It handles page caching, unused CSS removal, delayed JavaScript, lazy loading and preloading, and its light code footprint is why I rate it slightly above WP Rocket. Every plan has the same features; you only pay for more sites. Because it does its own page caching, it works on any host. Read my FlyingPress review for the settings I recommend.
3. WP Rocket: Easiest Setup on Any Host
- Price: $5/month for 1 site, $10 for 3, $25 for 50, all billed yearly; 3-year billing is shown at 30% off
- Trial and refunds: 14-day free trial, and a full refund if you are not satisfied with the results
- Best for: Beginners and business sites on Apache or Nginx hosting
- Skip it if: you are on LiteSpeed hosting and happy with LiteSpeed Cache
- My rating: 4.7/5, hands-on tested
WP Rocket applies most speed best practices as soon as you activate it, which makes it the easiest premium choice. I used it on a content-heavy blog, where load times dropped noticeably and Core Web Vitals improved. I did not keep a controlled before-and-after record, so I do not quote numbers for it. Its stronger options, Remove Unused CSS and Delay JavaScript, can break sliders, forms or menus until you add exclusions. The licence includes free RocketCDN delivery for three key pages. More detail is in my WP Rocket review.
4. NitroPack: Best Hands-Off, All-in-One Option
- Price: Free plan (1 site, 1,000 pageviews a month); Starter $8/month or $7/month billed yearly (8,000 pageviews); Plus $22 or $18 (40,000); Pro $99.99 or $83.01 (3 sites, 540,000)
- Refunds: 14-day money-back guarantee on paid plans
- Best for: Owners who want strong Core Web Vitals without tuning settings
- Skip it if: you have high traffic on a tight budget, because prices rise with pageviews
- My rating: 4.7/5, hands-on tested
NitroPack gave the biggest gain I have measured from a single tool. On a content-heavy WordPress blog with more than 120 articles, PageSpeed went from 61 to 94, load time from 4.5 to 1.7 seconds and Largest Contentful Paint from 3.8 to 1.9 seconds. Your results will depend on your theme, host and starting point. It includes a CDN on every plan. Because it handles caching itself, switch off other caching plugins when you install it. Full results are in my NitroPack review.
5. Perfmatters: Best for Cutting Script Bloat
- Price: $29.95/year for 1 site, $59.95 for 3, $124.95 for unlimited; renewals 15% off
- Refunds: 30-day money-back guarantee
- Best for: Sites slowed by plugins, page builders and third-party scripts
- Skip it if: you need a page cache; Perfmatters does not cache pages
- My rating: 4.7/5, hands-on tested
Perfmatters is not a caching plugin. It lets you stop scripts and styles from loading on pages that do not need them, delay JavaScript, remove unused CSS and host analytics locally. Run it alongside LiteSpeed Cache, FlyingPress or WP Rocket. In my tests on three sites, mobile PageSpeed scores rose on every one, for example from 58 to 90 on a content blog. The site-by-site figures are in my Perfmatters review.
6. BunnyCDN: Best Low-Cost CDN
- Price: Pay as you go: $0.01/GB in Europe and North America, $0.03 in Asia and Oceania, $0.045 in South America, $0.06 in the Middle East and Africa; $1 monthly minimum
- Trial: 14 days free, no credit card
- Best for: Sites with visitors in several countries
- Skip it if: you need a permanently free CDN or your host already includes one
- My rating: 4.8/5, hands-on tested
A CDN does not replace a speed plugin; it serves your images, CSS and JavaScript from servers close to each visitor. BunnyCDN works with every tool on this list, and for most small and medium sites the bill stays small because you pay only for the data you use. If your host already includes a CDN, as Hostinger does for this site, you may not need another. My BunnyCDN review covers setup.
Which Combination Should You Use?
- On LiteSpeed hosting: LiteSpeed Cache, plus Perfmatters if scripts are the problem. This site runs LiteSpeed Cache with Hostinger’s CDN.
- On Apache or Nginx hosting: FlyingPress or WP Rocket, plus Perfmatters if needed, plus BunnyCDN for an international audience.
- You want one tool and no settings: NitroPack on its own, with other caching plugins switched off.
- Never: two page caches together, such as WP Rocket with LiteSpeed Cache’s page cache switched on.
Plugins can only do so much on slow hosting or a heavy theme. If you are still choosing, compare hosts in my best managed WordPress hosting guide, and see why a lightweight theme matters in my GeneratePress review.
How to Test a Speed Plugin Safely
- Run PageSpeed Insights on mobile for your home page and one typical article, and note the scores.
- Install one tool and turn on its safe defaults only.
- Check key pages while logged out, because many optimisations are hidden from logged-in users. Test menus, forms and checkout.
- Switch on one advanced option at a time, such as Remove Unused CSS or Delay JavaScript, and retest after each.
- If something breaks, exclude that script or file rather than switching the whole feature off.
Final Verdict
There is no single best speed plugin, only the best one for your hosting. On LiteSpeed servers, the free LiteSpeed Cache is hard to beat, and it is what this site uses. On other hosts, FlyingPress is my top pick for its light code and strong defaults, with WP Rocket close behind as the easiest to set up. NitroPack suits owners who want everything handled for them and can live with pageview-based pricing. Add Perfmatters for script bloat and BunnyCDN for a global audience, and keep to one page cache.
Frequently Asked Questions
What is the best free WordPress speed plugin?
If your host runs LiteSpeed, the free LiteSpeed Cache plugin, because its page cache uses the server’s own cache. On other hosts its page cache does not work, so a paid plugin such as FlyingPress or WP Rocket, or NitroPack’s free plan for very small sites, is the better fit.
Can I use WP Rocket and LiteSpeed Cache together?
Not as two page caches. Running two caching plugins on the same pages causes conflicts. Choose one page cache; on LiteSpeed hosting that is usually LiteSpeed Cache.
Is Perfmatters a caching plugin?
No. Perfmatters removes unneeded scripts and styles, delays JavaScript and cleans up WordPress features. It is designed to run alongside a caching plugin such as LiteSpeed Cache, FlyingPress or WP Rocket.
Is FlyingPress better than WP Rocket?
They are close. I rate FlyingPress 4.8/5 and WP Rocket 4.7/5. FlyingPress has a lighter code footprint and the same features on every plan; WP Rocket is slightly easier for beginners. Both offer a 14-day free trial, so try one on your own site.
Do I need a CDN as well as a speed plugin?
Only if your visitors are spread across countries or your pages carry heavy images. A CDN such as BunnyCDN delivers files from servers near each visitor, and NitroPack already includes one. Check whether your host provides a CDN before adding another.
Do speed plugins improve SEO?
They can help. Faster pages improve Core Web Vitals and page experience, which support rankings, but useful content and relevance matter more. Measure before and after with PageSpeed Insights rather than relying on promises.
